WaveForms Live

FAQ

When streaming data, why do the signals not line up perfectly?
Channel buffers are retrieved individually and thus a certain number of points are sampled between reading each channel buffer.
How do I manually stop a logging session without WaveForms Live?
During a logging session, the Program button on the OpenScope can be pushed to safely stop.
Why does WaveForms Live say points were missed during streaming?
WaveForms Live will report when the browser has missed points when reading from the device. This is due to a sample rate that is faster than the rate that WaveForms Live can stream.
Why does WaveForms Live say points were missed during logging?
WaveForms Live will report when the device has missed points during logging and stop the logging session. This is due to SD card write speed limitations. To prevent this, lower the sample rate or purchase one of the recommended SD cards.
What are the recommended SD cards?
The performance of SD cards varies greatly, even within a given SD card class. For example Class 10 cards are rated for speeds 'up to' 10 MBps but actual performance varies greatly between manufacturers. Digilent has tested and recommends the following SD cards:
Why can I not abort a remote file transfer?
During a remote file transfer, the device will be unresponsive as it transfers that data. Therefore, WaveForms Live waits until the whole file is received or a timeout occurs before it interacts with the device again. It is possible to reset the device and WaveForms Live to abort a file transfer but it is not recommended.
Is WaveForms Live available offline (without an internet connection)?
Yes. An offline version of WaveForms Live is included in the Digilent Agent. If internet access is not available, right click the Digilent Agent and choose Launch WaveForms Live. This will launch the local version of WaveForms Live. You can also access the offline version of WaveForms Live by browsing to http://localhost:42135 from a supported web <browser.
How can I retrieve a file larger than 10MB?
For file sizes larger than 10MB, dlog files will need to be retrieved manually. On the OpenScope, connect the SD card to your computer and move the file. Next you'll want to convert the dlog file using dlog-utils.
How can I convert a file larger than 10MB?
To convert files larger than 10MB to a CSV file format, you can use dlog-utils.

OpenScope MZ

FAQ

How do I get started with OpenScope and WaveForms Live?
Please refer to the getting started guide here.
Is the OpenScope open source?
Yes, the OpenScope MZ hardware and firmware, Digilent Instrumentation Protocol, Digilent Agent and WaveForms Live are all open source.
When using the Wifi connection there is some repetitive noise on the oscilloscope signals that is not there when connected using USB. What causes this ?
This may be caused by the MRF24 (Wifi radio) transmitting. During transmission the MRF24 causes a large power spike the power/ground plane that can affect the analog circuitry. You can remove this spike by using a very low impedance USB power source; either a very good USB battery, or PC with a high current USB power source. Long USB cables, or cheap cables can make this issue worse, but most desktop PCs have good USB power sources and you won’t see the glitch.
How can I find my OpenScope MZ's MAC address?
The MAC address is currently not visible in WaveForms Live, but will be added in a future update (see GitHub Issue 22).

For now you can find the MAC address by doing the following:

  • Connect the OpenScope MZ to your computer.
  • Make sure the Digilent Agent does not have the device open (right click the agent and release the device if it does).
  • Open a serial terminal (like PuTTY) and Open the COM port associated with the OpenScope MZ with a baud rate of 1250000.
  • Press the reset button on the OpenScope MZ.
  • Following the instructions on the terminal menu to connect to a Wifi network.
  • When a Wifi connection is successfully established the MAC address is printed to the terminal.
Can OpenScope MZ be used on a Wifi network with a hidden SSID ?
No, the Wifi radio on the OpenScope MZ does not support networks with hidden SSIDs. If an attempt is made to connect an OpenScope MZ to a network with a hidden SSID the device may report a valid IP address, but communication with the OpenScope MZ will not be possible.
I can see my Wifi network on my computer, but when I scan with OpenScope MZ I do not see my network. What could cause this?
This may be caused by a Wifi network that is on channel 12 or 13 which the OpenScope MZ does not currently support. You can configure which channel(s) your Wifi network uses in your router's configuration menu.
How many samples can I take while logging?
Each file can be up to 4GB which means the max number of samples per channel is 2 billion.
Can I hotswap the SD card?
It is recommended that the device is power cycled after plugging in and removing an SD card.
What is the biggest SD card I can use with the OpenScope?
The max size supported is 32GB
Do I need to format my SD card before use?
Most SD cards come pre-formatted correctly. If the SD card needs to be formatted manually, format as FAT32.

Known Issues

When connected via USB 2. 0 Full Speed or slower port data may be lost
The OpenScope MZ requires a USB 2.0 High Speed or faster connection. If OpenScope MZ is connected to a USB 2.0 Full Speed or slower connection data buffers may be corrupted during transmission resulting in lost frames or incorrect data being displayed.

Solution: Connect the OpenScope MZ to a USB 2.0 High Speed or faster port.

Unable to connect to device via USB (Closed - Fixed)
  • If you connect to a device though the agent, unplug the device from the computer, reconnect to the computer and try to open the device in WaveForms Live the device cannot be opened.

Work Around
Right click on the Digilent Agent in the system tray and release the device. You should be able to connect from WaveForms Live.

Clicking release device with no active device causes agent to crash (Closed - Fixed)
  • If there is no active device and you right click the Digilent Agent and select Device»Release the Agent will crash. It is only possible to click this menu item with no active device on Mac.

Work Around
Please don't click that…Larissa…
